Memories of Janet from Australia

Created by Sandra 11 years ago
My first wife June and I first met Janet in Hong Kong in 1966. She and Alan were staying in the same transit hotel as we were while we searched for permanent accommodation. We established a friendship at that time which grew and was maintained over the years. During our first three year contact in Hong Kong we socialized often, and many memories of that time remain strong. Not least of which was the evening that we spent with a group of friends on South Bay Beach. Good company and a few beers that night led to cock-fighting in the shallows of the warm waters of Repulse Bay. It would be hard to forget Janet, as my ‘jockey’, almost strangling and half-drowning her ‘horse’ with her cross-legged hold on my neck. She was determined not to lose that battle. That memory is, to me, indicative of her fortitude and life-long determination to fight against all odds. We all remember Janet as a truly good friend. Whenever we visited England she made us feel most welcome when we stayed at her home. And, while at Chard, we remember her enthusiasm for showing us the local places of interest – and there were also many strolls and the occasional meal in Lyme Regis – a place she loved. I must admit that I probably put her tolerance to the test in 1977 when I was attached for six months to the RAF and often invited myself to Chard for the weekend. More good memories – especially of partying-on in the local pub after closing time. Janet was always a fun person to be with. The last time Beth & I visited in 1984 Janet was left to put up with us on her own. Her 'buffer', Alan, was away on duty in the Middle East. She showed us a great time once again. Janet was always the good hostess. We remember Janet’s love for her dogs. We have posted a photo of Jasper (?) and Janet at Chard in June 1984. We extend our condolences to Alan, Kevan and Sandra for their loss of a beautiful life. Peter & Beth Hodge, and June Queensland, Australia
